Hot summer days can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous for dogs. Here are some tips that can help keep your dog cool and comfortable:
Provide a cool environment
Make sure your dog has a cool place to rest, away from direct sunlight. This can be an indoor room, an outdoor area in the shade, or a kennel.
On hot days, you can use an air conditioner or fan to cool your dog down. However, do not blow the fan or air conditioner directly on your dog as this may cause them to catch cold.
Provide your dog with a cool bed or pad, such as a mattress filled with cold gel or water.
Bathe or play with your dog in a pool or tub. Make sure the water is not too cold, as this may cause your dog to cramp up.
Keep your dog well hydrated
Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times.
Adding some ice cubes to the water can help keep your dog cool.
Consider feeding your dog wet food or adding some wet food to the water to increase water intake.
Avoid taking your dog outdoors for long periods of time in hot weather. If you must go outside, be sure to give your dog frequent breaks and water.
Other Tips
Brushing or trimming your dog's coat can help keep them cool. However, do not shave your dog's coat, as the hair can help protect them from the sun and insect bites.
When walking your dog, avoid the hottest part of the day.
Use sunscreen to protect your dog's skin when they're outside, especially those areas with exposed skin.
Watch for signs of heat stroke, including excessive panting, salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. If any of these signs occur, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.
