This article introduces the care of newborn puppies from the aspects of warmth, diet, daily management, and winter care of newborn puppies. I hope it will be useful to everyone. Another reminder: ensuring the safety of the mother dog is the greatest love for the baby dog.
1. Keep warm
Newborn puppies should pay the most attention to keeping warm. The indoor temperature should be above 23 degrees Celsius. When the room temperature is below 21 degrees Celsius, a small electric blanket or hot water bottle should be used to increase the temperature, but be sure to wrap it in a towel to avoid burning the puppy. After puppies are born, they move from the constant temperature environment inside the mother's body to the variable temperature environment outside the body. These spotless little guys have sparse hair and their thermoregulatory function has not yet been fully formed, so they must be kept warm. At the same time, newborn puppies have very soft bones, are unstable in standing and have difficulty moving, and are easily suffocated or trampled to death by the female dog. At this time, the owner needs to strengthen care.
2. Diet
In fact, for puppies from birth to one month old, if the mother's milk is good, it is relatively easy for us to take care of the newborn puppies.
Pay attention to breastfeeding and supplementation. The newborn dog has not yet produced antibodies in its body. At this time, the female dog secretes a large amount of breast milk rich in various antibodies, so the newborn dog must eat enough colostrum. When the puppy is a little older and the supply of breast milk is insufficient, it needs to be properly supplemented. Do not feed milk at this time, because the puppy's gastrointestinal function is very poor, and mixing with milk at this time can easily cause diarrhea. It is best to use special dog milk powder. In order to reduce costs, skim milk or high-calcium skim milk powder can also be used. After boiling and sterilizing, bottle feeding should be carried out at a temperature of around 27°C. Generally, the amount of milk supplement does not need to be deliberately limited, and it should be fed until full. After 25 days of age, you can try to feed them with broth and porridge. Little guys often fight over each other when feeding. In order to avoid conflicts and individual stunting, the nipple of each little guy should be fixed so that they can each feed on their own milk and live in peace.
3.Daily management
You must also be careful and meticulous in daily management. After the puppies are 5 days old, they can be taken outdoors to bask in the sun with the mother dog on a nice day with warm wind and sunshine, twice a day, preferably half an hour each time. In this way, the puppies can breathe fresh air and use the ultraviolet rays in the sun to kill bacteria on their bodies. This will also help the coat to dry out and accelerate its growth. Puppies have a lot of dirt on their bodies, so they should be wiped with a soft cloth in time. They should also be bathed every two days. The temperature of the bath water should be between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Be sure to prevent the bath water from entering the ears. After bathing, you can trim the toenails of the puppies to avoid scratching the mother dog’s breasts and other puppies when feeding. After the puppies have a certain amount of physical strength and energy, they can be guided to play and play outdoors, but they must be prevented from biting and fighting with each other.
4. For winter conditions
Keeping newborn puppies warm is especially important in winter. Newborn puppies have a weak ability to regulate their own body temperature. If they stay close to their mother, it won't be a big problem, but if they lie far away, they will easily catch cold. If your puppy was born in winter, you need to prepare a warm kennel so that the puppy will not be far away from the mother dog. You can also consider putting something like a hot water bottle in the kennel, but The temperature should not be too high to avoid scalding the newborn puppies and mother dogs.
